GIS Commons Meeting Minutes
August 4, 2005
Hale 301
11-12

In attendance: Bernard, Chastain, Chubb, Gould, and Hutchinson

At the 2005 ESRI User Conference in San Diego, Kansas State University received a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) award from ESRI president Jack Dangermond. The award will be on display in the new GIS Commons. A photo from the award presentation is available on the GIS Commons website.

Questions that we need to review with Facilities, Geography and CNS include:

  • Discussion the safety of the petitioning of an area? Do these panels need to have a door? What about the safety of rolling the glass panel past the kitchen area?
  • Is the door to the conference room acceptable?
  • Does the GISSAL lab remain in existence and is any of this equipment used in the GIS Commons?
  • Where will large database files be stored and how will access to applications be handled? Seamless access to both applications, data and for storage is important. How will redundancy and backups be handled?
Eric provided information on innovative oriented GIS tables available from Northrop Grumman. The touch table, with space for 10, represents a unique means of collaborative geographic visualization ($160K, turnkey $250K). Two prototypes of a three dimensional variant (whose surface actually takes the shape of the 3D surface) have been built, though this model has yet to be priced . Initial thoughts are to place these tables in the workstation area.

We also discussed next steps and working with vendors.

A draft spreadsheet was developed that includes basic specifications for equipment and furnishings per area. Action item: Eric will share this with the GIS SWAT.

Action item: Rebecca will schedule a tour of the International Grain Science facility on Kimball. Tours of the facility are free while use of the Board Room is $240 per hour. Check out the Herman Miller chairs in the board room and the projection system.

Action item: Rebecca will schedule a meeting with the Herman Miller and audio/visual representatives to learn more about innovative furnishings and equipment.

Action item: Eric will e-mail Dave Debusman the CAD file so that he can begin work on the Facilities specifications, scope of work and cost. Eric, Rick and Shawn will then set-up a meeting with Dave to review the plans.

Action item: Rick will talk to Julie Bell about local storage versus SAN storage and map the access route to data/storage, applications and redundancy.

Next meeting: August 11, 11-12, International Grain Science building, 1908 Kimball
